A Beginner's Guide to Sports Psychology: Why the "Mental Game" is no longer optional
By Gayatri Bhushan | Co-Founder & CEO of Mind Matter Performance | HCPC Registered Chartered Sport & Exercise Psychologist
"I just choked."
It is the most painful sentence an athlete can say.
You put in the hours. Your nutrition was perfect. Your physical preparation was elite. But in the critical moment - when the pressure spiked and the lights got bright - your mind pulled the handbrake.
For a long time, the sporting world treated Psychology as a "fix" for broken athletes. You only saw the Psych if something was wrong.
At Science Behind Sport, we believe that is a dangerous misconception.
Psychology isn't just for solving problems; it is for building performance. Just as you train your legs to run faster, you must train your mind to think clearer under fire.
In my first guest article for Science Behind Sport, I want to demystify what a Sports Psychologist actually does, and share the three foundational pillars we use with Premier League footballers and elite athletes to build a bulletproof mindset.
The "Invisible" Muscle
Think of your brain as the control centre for your body.
You can have the strongest engine in the world (Physical Fitness), but if the driver is panicked, distracted, or fearful (Mental Fitness), the car will crash.
When I work with athletes - whether they are academy players at Chelsea FC or young track athletes in India - I start by explaining that confidence is not a personality trait. It is a skill. And like any skill, it can be drilled, practiced, and improved.
Here are the three areas that I begin with, when helping athletes to strengthen their mind.

1. Emotional Control: The "Traffic Light" System
The biggest enemy of performance is the "Fight or Flight" response. When you get nervous, your heart rate spikes, your muscles tense, and your decision-making brain shuts down.
We call this the "Red Zone."
In my Applied Basics of Sport Psychology course, I teach athletes to recognise their internal Traffic Lights:
-
🟢 Green: Calm, focused, in flow.
-
🟡 Amber: Frustrated, slightly anxious, rushing decisions.
-
🔴 Red: Panic, anger, "choking."
The Goal: You cannot stop yourself from hitting Amber. But you can stop Amber turning into Red.
Try this: The next time you feel frustration rising (after a missed shot or a bad call), use a Physical Trigger. Squeeze your fist for 3 seconds, take a deep breath, and release. It signals to your brain to reset from Amber back to Green.
2. Focus: Control the Controllables
Anxiety usually comes from worrying about things we cannot change: The referee, the weather, the opponent, or the final score.
I teach athletes to draw a circle.
-
Inside the circle: Your effort, your attitude, your preparation.
-
Outside the circle: What the coach thinks, what the crowd screams, whether you win or lose.
Elite athletes spend 95% of their mental energy inside the circle. Amateurs waste energy trying to control the outside.
If you find yourself worrying about "What if I lose?", you have drifted outside the circle. Bring it back to: "What is my job right now?"

3. Resilience: The "3Rs" Method
Mistakes are inevitable. The difference between a good athlete and a great one is how long they carry the mistake with them.
We use a simple framework called the 3Rs to help athletes "flush" a mistake and reset instantly:
-
RECOGNISE: Acknowledge the error. Don't ignore it, but don't dwell on it.
-
RELEASE: Use a physical action to "throw it away." (e.g., wipe your hands on your shorts, fix your socks).
-
REFOCUS: Say a keyword that directs you to the next action. (e.g., "Next ball," "Scan," "Defend").
This loop takes less than 5 seconds, but it prevents one mistake from turning into a disaster.
Talent is Physical. Winning is Mental.
I founded my practice, Mind Matter Performance, because I was once that young athlete who struggled with the weight of expectation. I know how lonely it can feel when your mind is working against you. But you don't have to guess anymore.
Your potential is high. Don't let your mindset be the limit. In the Applied Basics of Sport Psychology course, we don't just talk about these concepts, we build them. I take you through the exact profiling tools, visualisation techniques, and confidence drills used in elite sport, adapted for parents, coaches, and athletes at every level.
